Unique Glass Version of the Classic Mint Julep Cup. More Pleasurable to Drink From.
Few cocktails are as storied, as fraught with history and tradition in America, as the Mint Julep. The drink originated in the South, probably during the eighteenth century, and U.S. Senator Henry Clay of Kentucky introduced the Julep to Washington, D.C., at the Round Robin Bar in the famous Willard Hotel during his residence in the city. Kentuckians maintain that when a Mint Julep is made right, you can hear angels sing. Always made with fresh mint, Kentucky bourbon, and plenty of crushed or shaved ice, it has been the traditional beverage of Churchill Downs and the Kentucky Derby for nearly a century, sipped to the strains of "My Old Kentucky Home."
President Teddy Roosevelt was fond of Mint Juleps made with rye whiskey, a splash of brandy, fresh mint grown on the White House grounds, a sugar cube, and finely crushed ice. Prepared by White House steward Henry Pinckney (not actually TR himself), drinks were served in distinctive glass cups that resembled the pewter mugs of Churchill Downs tradition. The president called Mint Juleps “the very dream of drinks, the vision of sweet quaffings,” and it is said they made Teddy giggle with glee when they were served courtside to his guests, typically cabinet members or staffers whom had been cajoled into playing tennis with him.
